Poems from childhood

http://daisylupinpoetryfest.blogspot.com/

How this took me back to learning poems at school and having to recite them to Miss Davey! All of these poems are familiar to me; either my mother had to learn them when she was at school and later taught them to me, or I knew them from my schooldays and those of my daughters....

This was one of my mother's favourites; Meg Merrilies by John Keats. She had recited this for a school concert, dressed as a gypsy.

Old Meg she was a gypsy;
And liv'd upon the moors:
Her bed it was the brown heath turf,
And her house was out of doors
Her apples were swart blackberries,
Her currants, pods o' broom;
Her wine was dew of the wild white rose,
Her book a church-yard tomb.
Her brothers were the craggy hills,
Her sisters larchen trees;
Alone with her great family
She liv'd as she did please.

No breakfast had she many a morn,
No dinner many a noon,
And 'stead of supper she would stare
Full hard against the moon.
But every morn, of woodbine fresh
She made her garlanding,
And every night the dark glen yew
She wove, and she would sing.
And with her fingers old and brown
She plaited mats o' rushes,
And gave them to the cottagers
She met among the bushes.
Old Meg was brave as Margaret Queen,
And tall as Amazon:
An old red blanket cloak she wore,
A chip hat had she on.
God rest her aged bones somewhere —
She died full long agone!

Fabric ATC

I was working on a patchwork foundation piecing block tutorial for Craft Club, so while I was at the machine I put together this little example using the 1½" cloth squares that come as fabric samples. I did think about zig-zagging around the edge, but so often this distorts the shape, so I put it in a cellophane envie to protect it. I wrote the details on the back with black pen, as I am told it is infra dig to use any paper in a fabric ATC!

June Swap: Orange theme.

The flower was an experiment in cloth Origami, the paint chip is "Spice Orange" and as this work turned out to be extremely orange, I decided on something a little more restrained for the second item. This was drawn with a permanent black pen and coloured with watercolour. I trimmed it a little after seeing the scan, and mounted it on black card. It looks much better!

May Travel Swap

I will admit to being pleased with these. The folded map is made from an old Ordnance Survey map, and the pocket from a potato bag. The little charm came from a bracelet. The suitcase on the other ATC is my first attempt with shrink plastic and the words came from a pocket Larousse Dictionary rescued from a rubbish bin.

Free Choice May Swap

Paisley-Daisley; the orange paisley background is wrapping paper with a surround of green glitter glue, and the medallion is a teabag fold I had waiting for a suitable home.
"The Ties that Bind" is layered from magazine pictures, very narrow brown ribbon, and a copper wire doo-dad that resulted from my first attempts with a wire jig.

May Swaps

My May swaps were a mixed bunch. The pink one incorporated a heat embossed foam charm. "No Evil" came about when playing with a round punch and sticky-backed black baize.

More Needle felting

My first attempt at needle felting "in the round". I made each petal individually from red wool roving, then felted on a black roving spot. The next step was to arrange the petals and needle felt them together. I had some merino/silk knitting wool that I wound into a loose ball, then needled until it consolidated into the right shape. This was needled into position. I found that the petals were very flat and quite floppy, so I needled them together lightly until they made more of a cup shape. I am now adding beads to represent stamens. I think maybe I need a few more, and I may, or may not, try to make a leaf.

Needle Felting

I came across these artworks and was inspired. http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/glendafelt.html An email to my younger daughter resulted in the arrival a couple of weeks later of a bag of Merino tops and a handful of felting needles. I'm still experimenting with transferring images to cloth, but a "Touchy-Feelly" theme for a swap led me to using sari silk fibres needlefelted down onto a felt backing.

"Sam Snail" is just felted.

"Fantasy Flower" has additional stitching with a shiny space-dyed-with-felt-tips rayon, and beaded stamens.

Crossover....

Some of the techniques I use elsewhere are creeping into my ATC's. Stitching on card is something to do while watching TV or listening to the radio. I usually prick 3 or 4 layers together during the day when the light is good, then select a graphic to go with the embroidery, and choose thread colours to enhance the graphic. As thread for a card does not have to withstand washing, it is a simple matter to space dye thread with felt tip pens or watercolours.

Here are examples of cards

and an ATC.

Is this Blog thriving on neglect?

...well maybe, maybe not......I'm too busy doing to blog about it!

Here are some ATCs that I remembered to scan before posting.
